Day 2: Castel del Monte - Trani
After breakfast, depart to discover Castel del Monte, one of the most mysterious and fascinating castles in the Southern Italy, designed by Frederick II of Swabia. It has an octagonal base and was built around 1240. Enjoy a tour with a professional tour guide, who will trace the monument history following the various interpretations about its probable function and enriched with anecdotes on the life of Emperor defined as "Stupor Mundi". Later you will have the chance to have lunch in an Italian masseria, the typical Apulian farmhouse.
You will have free time for lunch on your own. Then depart for Trani, also called the "Slow city" and "The Pearl of the Adriatic". It is known especially for the beautiful Cathedral in Apulian Romanesque style. Included in the list of the "Italian wonders", Trani is rich in artistic and architectural treasures, churches and palaces of every era. A beautiful guided walking tour through the ancient Jewish quarter will reveal the multicultural component of the city. Later, you will travel to the next stop, Matera, where an overnight stay is planned.
Day 3: Matera
After breakfast, depart to discover another significant tourist attraction: Matera, also known as the "Stone City" and "Underground City", the place of Sassi, a World Heritage Site. Matera is considered one of the most suggestive places in southern Italy; it was declared Unesco Site on 1993 and European Capital of Culture in 2019. You will enjoy a guided walking tour that will take you to discover the history of a town carved into rock, where inhabitants still lived until the XX century. The itinerary includes a visit to a cave-like house recently opened to the public, and to ancient rupestric churches and cisterns.
Day 4: Alberobello-Ostuni
After breakfast, depart for Alberobello, a World Heritage UNESCO site which offers you a breathtaking view. Trulli are ancient, conical buildings made of stone, specific for central and southern of Apulia. The local guide will show you also the panoramic view on Rione Aia Piccola with its infinite expanse of conical roofs. Later, after having lunch in one of the iconic Trulli, you will depart for the beautiful town of Ostuni, also called "The White City". It stands out for its characteristic old town with totally white painted houses. You will enjoy a guided walking tour in this strategic place, from where it will be possible to admire the amazing expanse of olive trees bounded by the deep blue sea. The Cathedral, furthermore, represents the most important monument of the city in its Romanesque-flowery style. You will also have a stop for an extra virgin olive oil tasting. Lecce is located in the center of the wonderful Salento peninsula, one of the regions of Apulia.
