Your tour starts in Sorrento. You'll meet your expert guide at the port and embark for the island of Ischia on a ferry. On the ferry, enjoy amazing sights and the placid tranquility of the Tyrrhenian Sea. You'll want to get your camera ready as you approach and pass by some of the oldest villages on the island.
Our ferry will dock at the city of Forio, home to the one-of-a-kind Mortella Gardens. As you approach the city, you may notice numerous coastal watchtowers, a one-time defense from Middle Age pirates. Once in Forio, we'll make our way to the Gardens, which overlook the city and and provide picturesque views of Forio and its harbor.
Once you arrive at the famed Mortella Gardens, you'll see firsthand why they won an award over one hundred competitors to be named "The Most Beautiful Park in Italy" in 2004. Your guide will delve deeper into the history of Mortella as you bask in its beauty.
Carved into volcanic rock in 1949 by the late English composer Sir William Walton and his wife Lady Susana, Mortella Gardens were the ideal getaway and the couple's private home. It is here where Walton began composing his famous opera, "Toilus and Cressida". Though Sir William passed away in 1983, Lady Susana inhabited the famous villa, which served as the couple's private home, until her passing in 2010.
You'll have some free time to wander through the gardens yourself, taking as much time as you desire to admire the unique collection of flora. You can purchase limited refreshments while at Mortella Gardens, but it would be a good idea to eat a big breakfast before departure.
To conclude the tour, you'll meet up with your guide again and view another part of Ischia by coach. Finally, you'll arrive at the port in time to take the 17:30 ferry back to Sorrento, enjoying another ride on the peaceful Tyrrhenian Sea in the dusky late afternoon light.
