Begin your tour from San Polo
In the San Polo Sestriere, you can still breathe the air of the ancient Venice. One of its distinguishing characteristics is the presence of both residential and productive places, in addition of being the meeting point of West and East, that results in an atmosphere dominated by the scent of spices and wood. The most important zone was, historically, Rialto, once comprised in the Sestriere, and to which it is connected through the world-famous Rialto Bridge.
Between statues and fields
Your tour will continue toward the discovering of this peculiar and ancient neighborhood; you will visit the Campo San Polo, the biggest in town. Its importance grew so much that, beginning as an area intended to host cultivation and grazing, it then became, in the seventeenth century, the main square of the city, and the meeting point of small markets. Moreover, you will see the famous statue of the Gobbo di Rialto, the man bent on its knees which sustains with his back the ladder leaning against the column from which the Comandador used to proclaim laws and give other announcements.
The Frari Basilica
After having observed the wonders situated on the streets of this magical district, your tour will continue with a visit to the wonderful Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, majestic and grandiose. It is situated in the Campo dei Frari, to which its name is due, and dedicated to Mary’s Assumption. Its perimeter has the shape of a Latin cross, and its style is a combination of Gothic and Venetian. Together with naves, bows and 17 monumental altars, it guards wonderful art pieces, among which two paintings by Tiziano stand out. A must see before the end of your tour is Canova’s grave, a monument which preserves the urn made in porphyry that contains the heart of the artist.
