Venture through the scenic Italian countryside and arrive at the quaint, spiritual towns of Orvieto and Assisi. Tour the hallowed halls of several grand and beautiful churches, including the Orvieto Cathedral, the Basilica di San Francesco and the Convent of Santa Chiara. Travel back in time and immerse yourself in local history as you visit the basilica where the renowned Saint Francis of Assisi once worshipped.
In Rome, we will come to pick you up at your central hotel. Leave the city and head north, crossing the Tiber River Valley and approaching the town of Assisi, the birthplace of Saint Francis. Many visitors deem their time in this small town a spiritual experience, but see for yourself as you stroll the narrow, ancient streets.
In Assisi, visit the Basilica di Santa Chiara, a lovely 13th-century church situated among rolling hills. This church is an homage to Saint Clare of Assisi, a disciple of Saint Francis and founder of the Order of Saint Clare. From here, proceed to the site where Saint Francis was born and learn about his fascinating life from your knowledgeable tour guide.
Pass the Piazza del Comune, or town hall square, a local remnant of Roman times. Enter the breathtaking Basilica of Saint Francis and appreciate Italian artist Giotto's intricate frescoes which depict the life of Saint Francis. With works by other skilled artists such as Cimabue, the basilica and World Heritage Site presents a snapshot of Italian art during that period.
Pause for lunch and then visit the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli. Nestled in the foothills of Assisi, it was here where Saint Francis began his renowned Francescan movement. Visit the Porzioncula, a tiny church encased by the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, where Saint Francis died in 1226.
Continue to Orvieto, a truly striking city built atop dramatic volcanic tuff cliffs. In Orvieto, tour the Orvieto Cathedral, a magnificent Gothic masterpiece with a striking façade, complemented by ornate golden mosaics and imposin bronze doors.
The cathedral's two chapels are adorned with frescoes of Judgement day, painted by two of the era's most best artists. This 14th-century cathedral also holds the Corporal of Bolsena, a piece of a miracle that was said to have occurred in a nearby town.
