The construction of the magnificent dome, however, was designed by Brunelleschi, who rose to the role of "first Renaissance architect". He created a double self-supporting shell, which did not require the presence of traditional armor support. On March 25th 1436, the Florence Cathedral was consecrated by Pope Eugene IV.
