A private tour to visit the monuments and squares of Florence
You will meet your expert local guide in the city center, in Piazza della Repubblica, and from there you will visit the most famous places in Florence, such as the Loggia del Porcellino, the Ponte Vecchio, Piazza della Signoria, the Dantesque district, up to the immense complex of the "Opera del Duomo".
Right here, you will start a mystical journey through the centuries: firstly, you will visit the Baptistery dedicated to St. John the Baptist (patron saint of Florence), one of the oldest buildings in town, consecrated in 1059 and excellent example of Florentine Romanesque style. A riot of white and green marble, geometric shapes and colors. Inside, the ceiling is decorated with a mosaic that tells the stories of Mary, Jesus, Joseph, St. John and the Last Judgment.
Visit the Florence Cathedral with an accredited guide
Next, you will visit the imposing Duomo (also known as the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore), started on behalf of the Signoria in 1296 by the architect Arnolfo di Cambio. In 1334, the direction of the work was entrusted to Giotto and after 1350 to Francesco Talenti.
The construction of the magnificent dome, however, was designed by Brunelleschi, who rose to the role of "first Renaissance architect". He created a double self-supporting shell, which did not require the presence of traditional armor support. On March 25th 1436, the Florence Cathedral was consecrated by Pope Eugene IV.
The great Brunelleschi's Dome dominates the square and the entire city, being visible from many points in the surrounding hills at some distance. On this private guided tour you will have the opportunity to freely climb the dome.
Access the Cathedral, the Baptistery and the Bell Tower
Next to the Cathedral, stands the Giotto's Bell Tower and, on the back, is situated the new Museum of the "Opera del Duomo". Here, you will admire several extraordinary treasures, removed from the monuments of the square for the sake of preservation. The collection includes the sculptures of the tower, the Heaven's Gate and North Gate by Lorenzo Ghiberti, the Mary Magdalene by Donatello and the Pietas by Michelangelo.
A section is also dedicated to the construction of Brunelleschi's Dome and another to the history of the façade, dating back from the 14th to the 19th century.
