Considered one of the most fascinating cities in whole Italy, Naples holds innumerable historical and artistic treasures that visitors can discover: monuments, buildings, bridges, roads... And, last but not least, squares! Those, in particular represent the authentic souls of the city, where people used to meet since from the foundation of the city.
It's not an easy task to choose a favorite square in such a gorgeous city: each has its own history and identity. So here is a list, made by ItalyXP, of the best 5 (+1) squares in Naples that you cannot absolutely miss if you visit this city!
In Naples, this wonderful and immense square is much loved by citizens and tourists who visit it every day, is an undisputed symbol of the city. A wonderful place, known throughout the world for its size, so big that it can accommodate large concerts or events. Until the early 90s this treasure was reduced to being a mere and miserable parking, but now, fortunately, things have changed; has recognized the highly artistic, historical and architectural and you can admire it in all its glory without cars around.
Positioned in the heart of the city, Piazza del Plebiscito is a place of connection with both the shopping streets, with both the waterfront, ideal for long walks along the sea. Highly recommended to walk to the center of the square and look around, you will be fascinated by the "outline" of this square: see many other magnificent attractions like the Royal Palace, Castel Nuovo and the Galleria Umberto I and the frame, make this place unique and very characteristic.
What makes splendid Piazza del Plebiscito, besides its size and its frame, is its structure. Ancient and beautiful, composed of the basilica and the colonnade that take us back to Roman times, and just in front of the basilica are two majestic equestrian statues, which raise even more the high level of this fantastic place.
This historic square can be considered as a solemn and almost sacred place, one of the most popular and busiest city. This ancient square was originally called "Largo del Mercatello" and although it was outside the walls of the city was, as now, very busy and always full of people. Piazza del Gesù Nuovo is definitely one of the most picturesque squares and features of the historic center of Naples is not large and impressive as Piazza del Plebiscito or Piazza Dante, is considered to be in fact more like a small square typical and familiar, but no less important or beautiful. San Domenico Maggiore is a truly wonderful place, one of the most important in Naples. Famous for being lively and very characteristic, located in the historic heart is easily accessible. It's close to many other attractions, inevitable and a nice pass to this open space, admire and breathe the air of Naples and Campania. What characterizes San Domenico Maggiore is the giant obelisk and the old church from which the square is named.

One must be careful when we passing this square, as it's very often confused with the adjacent Piazza del Plebiscito... So, be careful, as we're talking about two different and unique attractions.
Piazza Trieste e Trento recognize it for the small but fine fountain, called by the Neapolitans jokingly "fountain of the Artichoke", which has around him many famous bar where it's really enjoyable drink, maybe a typical Neapolitan coffee, delicious ice cream, and allows to relax watching the wonders that are around.
The beauty of this small square, is in fact in his surroundings: The Teatro San Carlo, Galleria Umberto I, the church of San Francesco di Paolo with its majestic colonnade and many other beautiful buildings. Piazza Trieste e Trento is therefore not only an open space to get to the most famous Piazza del Plebiscito, but it is also worth a visit and living. We are not in front of a famous attraction and vibrant as the others, but we are faced with an interesting and fascinating symbol of Naples that reflects an era of the city and which has a high historical value.
This square is much loved by the Neapolitans, and it is impossible not to fall in love right away, it is a place that you live to 100%, both day and night, in summer and winter. It is a place always active, meeting point, characterized by large numbers of people passing and stops in the many bars, clubs and restaurants to eat well and have fun.
Piazza Bellini, especially in the evening, boasts a lively nightlife: music and delicious cocktails attract young people who meet here, and open space make this one of the most attractive and vital to the whole city.
By day it is still a busy square, a bustle of workers and the students wake up every morning, but not only. You can come across many street artists who choose this place to work and show their works: painters, sculptors, designers and poets.
A place that can seem almost a retreat from work and stress, where you can find the peace and the time to devote to yourself and your friends, to eat and drink together until late at night, immersed in the authentic Neapolitan atmosphere.
