Our amazing tour will take you to discover the Crete Senesi, one of the most particular regions of Tuscany. Characterized by its suggestive and unique landscapes, Crete Senesi will enchant you with its colors and flavors.
Your journey begins in the city of Siena, along one of the most charming streets in the region, the ancient Via Cassia, which winds through the hills and clay (“creta” in Italian). Here, you will notice the ancient conformations of the soil, as originated by the accumulation of sand and clay, which give the landscape a surreal appearance. Don’t forget your camera, because during this tour you will have lots of opportunities for sensational and unforgettable pictures.
The tour of the Crete Senesi continues towards the centre of Asciano, where you will visit an ancient market place, as well as one of the most important abbeys in the area: the Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore. An oasis of relaxation and meditation, the point of origin of the Olivetans, monastic order now spread all over the world. Among the fascinating park, with the cells of the hermits, lie the convent, the church and especially the cloister, frescoed by artists such as Il Sodoma (Antonio Bazzi) and Luca Signorelli.
The lunch break will take place at the local winery, where you will have the opportunity to taste local delicacies: the famous Cinta Senese ham, pecorino cheese, honey, olive oil, and finally a good glass of Brunello, one of the finest wines in Italy, renowned across the world, proud product of these lands.
The tour of the Crete Senesi will end in Montalcino, a medieval town that became famous thanks to the tenacity of its people who have never surrendered to the enemy during the wars of the past. You can visit the Abbey of Sant'Antimo, a fascinating Romanesque church in a picture-perfect setting, where you might be able to enjoy the wonderful sound of the Gregorian chant.
