The establishment of the city dates back to 600 BC, when the Greeks settled in this area and founded a city called Poseidonia, which soon became one of the most active in Campania. In 273 BC the Romans found a colony, changing the name of the city with the current one. During the Roman Empire, Paestum had a long and gradual decline, up to a total abandonment in the eighth century because of floods.
