With this private tour you will explore Paestum, a remarkable archaeological site located in Southern Campania, that houses the best-preserved Greek temples in the world. The guided tour includes both the diggings, where you will admire the ancient ruins and artifacts, and the Archaeological Museum.
In the northern part of Cilento, in Campania, there is Paestum, one of the main centers of Ancient Greece and one of the most precious archaeological pearls in Italy.
The establishment of the city dates back to 600 BC, when the Greeks settled in this area and founded a city called Poseidonia, which soon became one of the most active in Campania. In 273 BC the Romans found a colony, changing the name of the city with the current one. During the Roman Empire, Paestum had a long and gradual decline, up to a total abandonment in the eighth century because of floods.
You can admire the stunning ruins of the ancient and glorious Greek-Roman city, beautifully preserved over the centuries. The itinerary includes three Doric temples of the fifth century BC (among the best preserved in the world): the Temple of Neptune, the Temple of Poseidon and the Temple of Ceres. In addition, you can visit the amphitheater and the forum, which was the center of social and economic life of the city.
The excellent state of preservation of the ruins of Paestum makes them one of the best examples in the world, so that the entire archaeological area of the city has been included in the UNESCO heritage. A short distance from the archaeological complex there is the National Archaeological Museum of Paestum, which houses artifacts dated from the seventh century BC including valuable evidence of everyday items, arts and crafts. A must-visit to discover the origins of Paestum.
